Designer Favs: Bookshelf Styling

Very few things bring a twinkle to a designer’s eye the way an empty shelf does! Open space equals open-ended creative possibilities for a designer. Che Bella Senior Designer Calie Pierce brings her design know-how to the forefront, sharing her favorite accessories to use when staging bookshelves and all shelving types, for that matter! Bring these imaginative additions into your space and you’ll be tickled pink with the results. (And don’t be surprised when your family and friends fawn over your home!).

A Nod to Organics

Shelving tends to be straight-lined and linear in nature. Adding pieces with texture and greenery with a nod to the natural environment softens the décor creating a welcoming scene. Incorporating elements with non-geometric shapes builds on the organic theme.

To Have and to Hold

Vessels and vases in various shapes and sizes are tried-and-true elements to include in display groupings. Pottery such as earthenware, porcelain, and stoneware is one of Calie’s favorites to incorporate as shown in our Tailored Boho Eden Prairie, MN lower level remodel. These pieces come in limitless shapes and colors to match a home’s décor. Calie comments, “I encourage homeowners to surround themselves with pieces that bring them joy and have meaning to them – on their shelving and throughout their home. Oftentimes, including pieces of art or pottery fill this niche.”

Bookish Stacks and Layers

While the label ‘bookshelf’ implies function, the books themselves can be used in inspired ways to stack and layer, adding to the decorative story. Turn books on their side or grab a collection of like-colored spines to add visual drama. Use larger books as a base for ornamental items on the shelves. Arrange a group of books by size or shape and even consider laying a collection of titles spine-side ‘in’ to expose the pages of a book.  While it may make a title difficult to find, it adds texture to the scene – all in the name of design!

Photos and Petite Décor

The most impactful pieces on a shelf are often personal and understated in stature. Consider including small, framed photos or petite pieces of art in your collection. These items have a way of finding their way into the heart. Stand them up straight versus tilting them on the shelf when possible. Our Lakeside home remodel project in Burnsville, MN shows just how it’s done. Look closely at your favorite shelves and you’re likely to find a ‘little’ something special – literally and figuratively.
