Designer Favs: Bedroom Design Essentials

On the heels of our recent Luxury Boutique Primary Bedroom interior design project reveal, Che Bella Interiors Design Assistant Stephanie Osei thought it would be fun to share the magic behind how to space plan and design an exceptional bedroom space. Whether you desire a luxurious bedroom or a cozy hideaway, follow along as Steph walks us through bedroom design essentials that check all the boxes.

Space Planning

Above all else, a bedroom needs to have good flow. Steph shares, “homeowners often add more furniture and décor than the space can accommodate or bring in pieces that are too large in scale for the size of room.” She encourages homeowners to resist the urge to overfill their bedroom space. “It is important to acknowledge the amount of floor space you need in order to comfortably walk around in your room. Remember, your bedroom should be a place to unwind and relax and walking into a tight space can be a stress inducer,” urges Steph. Our Tranquil bedroom design project in Burnsville, MN and Luxury Boutique primary bedroom project in Lake Elmo, MN both offer simple design layouts with ample floor space.

Color Scheme

Once the layout for your room is established, it’s time to think about the colors you want to incorporate into the space. Steph opts for subtle colors in most of her bedroom designs. She shares, “I love to build layers and layers of rich, calming hues into my designs. A tone-on-tone neutral color scheme speaks to me.” She continues, “Using a subtle base palette doesn’t mean that you can’t incorporate saturated colors. Try using throw pillows, blankets or even artwork to bring in that ‘pop’ of bold color if you wish.”

Look Up!

Don’t forget to ‘look up’ when planning your dream-filled bedroom. Consider adding structural details such as beams or a coffered bedroom ceiling to add depth to the space, or paint or wallpaper the ceiling.  These design techniques emphasize a cozy atmosphere and add visual interest. In addition, Steph reminds homeowners, “An intriguing ceiling light, whether a chandelier or flush-mounted style, can also elevate your room’s design.”

Dual Purpose Furniture

While it may sound simple, Steph reminds homeowners to “use your furniture” – looking beyond their basic functionality of housing clothing and an alarm clock or lamp. Steph likes to think of her case goods, such as dressers and end tables, as display platforms. In her mind, they offer the perfect opportunity to display artwork, accessories, and memorabilia. As featured in our Luxe bedroom interior design project in Prior Lake, MN, lamps, pictures and vases have never had a friendlier (and more style-forward) home on which to perch!
