2014: A Few of Our Favorite Things
As 2014 winds down, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of our favorite design things from this year, from lighting to wallcovering & everything in between! We were able to incorporate some of these into our projects in 2014, but I would love to use more of them during the coming year!
*If you are looking for an overview of 2015 trends, we showed you some of the new releases and trends from HighPoint Market here.*
Furniture: Upholstery
Furniture introduced this year goes from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. In general, most of the furniture we are seeing has clean lines and simple shapes, which I love. Higher backs are also popular, which is a great way to add drama and varying heights to a space. Stools and ottomans are becoming increasing popular — they can be used everyday for putting your feet up but then give the ability to change your space around for entertaining and extra seating. I also love doing a bench in the dining room (as seen in this post).
Furniture: Case Goods
Case goods vary so much in style, but I have noticed how much importance has been placed on merging function + style. Case goods are being built for the things we use everyday, like flat-screen TV’s and incorporate storage that we all need. Furniture that serves multiple purpose (like the wine console table seen here) means that small spaces can do double-duty.
Textiles
Some of my favorite textiles this year incorporate pattern in big ways! Southwest-inspired patterns are really fun and add some rustic character to a space. Fabric that mimics marbles and stones have also been seen this year. I love this idea in small doses to create a focal point or pop of pattern. I am also loving the fabrics that are more tone-on-tone but really add that bit of texture & interest to a space.
Wallcovering
We often choose wallpaper that will add a subtle texture versus a busy pattern. I love the grasscloth & grasscloth-inspired vinyl that has been popular this year. Along with the wood and wood-look wallpaper, which is another great way to add subtle texture & interest. Of course, in the right space, patterned wallpaper is so fun! As evidenced by our showcase house room this year, seen here. All of these wallpapers would be great in small doses – a powder room, ceiling, one wall in study or bedroom, etc.
Lighting
The lighting this year echoes some of the overall design trends – brass is back! For those of you who are worried that brass seems too 1980’s — the brass we are seeing is more muted and subtle. Think matte instead of gloss. Mixing of brass and oil-rubbed bronze or black is also seen throughout. This is a great way to pull in the brass even if you have mostly oil-rubbed bronze or black fixtures.
