Holiday Decorating Style Guide, Part III: Mid-Century Modern

For Part III of our Holiday Decorating Style Guide, I thought it would be fun to explore a style that is a little bit more “out-of-the-box” – Mid-Century Modern. This style is typically seen in homes built between 1945 & 1975. If you watch MadMen, this is the style that is often seen in the homes on the show. Characterized by clean lines and an innovative use of materials, this style is seen in everything from housewares to large-scale buildings. Many “classic” furniture pieces, like the Saarinen Tulip Table or the Eames Lounge Chair are hallmarks of mid-century modern design. If your home or decorating style is mid-century modern, you have the opportunity to create a holiday look that is very unique and fun, while still being updated and modern.

Elements to incorporate: Starbursts, retro / vintage holiday ornaments in multiple colors, silver, handmade elements, mid-century modern furniture (of course!). If you are daring, an aluminum or flocked tree.
Color Scheme: Dark grays, blues, silvers, golds, yellows, greens + white, black and brown. Don’t be afraid to stray from your color scheme with multi-colored bulbs on the tree or handmade elements introducing bright colors. Afterall, a pop of color is one of the hallmarks of mid-century design!
Fabrics: Mod prints, velvets, vintage plaids, stripes
