Designer Favs: Laundry Room Remodel Ideas
The clothes won’t wash themselves – it’s true! However, when you ‘get’ to do laundry in a well laid-out and highly-appointed space, the task of doing laundry is significantly more enjoyable. In this blog, the Che Bella Interiors interior design and remodeling team lays out design elements that add incredible function and elevate the laundry experience day after day.
Innovative Built-Ins
Finding ways to sort, wash, dry, and fold in one space is a herculean task. Our designers incorporate innovative products into their designs creating efficient space plans. A favorite product of Che Bella designers Calie Pierce and Haley Leadstrom is the DryAway drying rack. Calie recently built the product into her Restful Retreat Eagan, MN primary bathroom and laundry room project. DryAway is a pull-out drying rack designed to slide into a cabinet within the laundry space. It ‘redefines laundry with its sleek recessed design,’ and is a great feature for laundry rooms of all sizes, eliminating the need to drape wet clothing across furniture or on a pop-up drying rack. The system helps keep a clean aesthetic and keeps it from feeling crowded – a win-win! DryAway comes in a variety of colors to fit with the overall aesthetic of a home and is available in several depths.
Storage Rules the Roost
The amount of storage in a laundry space often equates to its level of productivity. Simply put, our designers counsel that ample storage is a must! Cabinets and drawers allow for detergent, cleaning products and towels to be stored and organized in one area. Custom pullouts in a laundry room, like the ones shown here in our Lakeside Burnsville, MN home remodel project, are an exceptional addition to the space, keeping needed supplies close at hand yet discreetly tucked away when not in use. Taking the cabinetry to the ceiling and using every square inch of space available, even alongside the washer and dryer, also makes a world of difference in the flow of the space.
Backsplash and Flooring Materials
The relatively small square footage typically found in a laundry space can make design choices for backsplash and flooring materials a bit more playful. It may be possible to splurge on materials simply because the quantity needed is less than needed in a larger room. In addition, the scale plays into the aesthetic of the space as our designers often encourage homeowners to consider materials with a pop of color or an unusual shape. Bringing in a patterned wallpaper or an ornate tile is a fantastic way to personalize the space.
Durable, water-resistant materials are a must in laundry rooms. We use flooring material such as tile or Luxury Vinyl Plank that can handle the grit and drips of laundry and is easy to clean. The hexagon floor tile shown in our Lakeside Burnsville, MN home remodeling project is a sturdy workhorse with high style. The classic tile backsplash used in the project withstands the moisture in the room and is laid vertically to add dimension while playing into the timeless style of the home.
Counterspace is King
Having counterspace in a laundry room is the cherry on top! Our Timeless Eagan, MN, laundry and kitchen project features a small yet efficient countertop. An open countertop finishes a laundry space and offers a place to sort, fold, or simply set the detergent when your hands are full. Adding a sink to the counter area is an added bonus, convenient for soaking stubborn stains or washing your hands.
