Before & After Stories: Luxury Boutique – A Primary Bedroom
Intentionally carrying an air of moodiness, this Lake Elmo, MN primary bedroom was beautifully transformed from its original state into the spectacular space it is today. The project is a culmination of a multi-year relationship between the homeowners and our Twin Cities interior design team. We have worked with this family since they built their home, helping them furnish the majority of the home with new furniture and décor.
The images and story below detail the dramatic change from what was ‘before’ to what came ‘after’ – the realization of their dream luxury boutique hotel-inspired bedroom!
What Was ‘Before’
Classic and comfortable with a bit of glam was how we described the bedroom before the project began. Neutral wall color, bedding and plush wall-to-wall carpet was accented with shimmering mirrors and furnishings with a metallic finish and inlaid mirrored panels. While clean and well-cared for, the room left little to be desired in the way of dramatic design requested by the clients. That’s where we came in!
What Came ‘After’
Exceptionally balanced with luxurious detail, the room’s design captures the essence of a luxury boutique hotel longed for by our homeowners. The design takes it a step further with added moodiness in the room.
Dramatic Wall Color and Trim
The room is dramatic, with touches of gold lighting sparkling against a deep Urbane Bronze paint, which finishes the incredible double-layer wainscotting trim on opposing ends of the room, as well as the tray ceiling – stunning! According to Che Bella Senior Designer, Stefanie Cohoe, “the design needed to have the elevated details of the wainscoting trim on both walls, not just one.” Insert drama here! The detail on the wainscoting finish on both walls was shifted towards the main door to accommodate the depth of the floor-to-ceiling drapery. Without this step, part of the finish detail would have been hidden by the drapery and not centered on the nightstands.
Custom Furnishings
The homeowners purchased the lavishly appointed custom bedding through Che Bella a few years ago, which became a foundational element in the design. The bed fabric is called ‘Mink’ and feels like a velvety mohair, which plays nicely against the dark paint color, keeping a calm but moody and cozy feel. Stefanie adds, “we built the design around the layers and layers of linens and pillows, which added a softness to the clean lines and dark colors in the room.”
A sand-toned drapery flows across the entire wall of windows, additionally softening the space and perfectly complementing the dark tones in the room. We leaned on a designer’s window treatment trick, shifting the drapery stacks to keep the window opening centered as the window itself is not centered on the wall.
The bed is framed with a tufted headboard on one end, giving it texture and interest, while a bench seat of leather sits at the foot of the bed. Yet another play on contrast in the room.
Final Touches
Lying atop the rich wood floor is an enormous rug that oozes indulgence with just the right amount of sheen and texture. It anchors the room in just the right way.
The furniture is modern enough to match the moody vibe, yet provides a clean, fresh hotel feel. Design challenge met! A giant leaning mirror is perched in the corner. Not only is this eye-catching piece functional, but the client’s two daughters entertain themselves with fashion shows in front of the mirror – win-win!

Lavishness and sophistication are a matched set in this primary bedroom.
